Dean Cox, the head coach of the Sydney Swans, acknowledged that the team’s culture “I cannot comment on what happened in the room, it is a police investigation,” and voiced his disappointment regarding the actions of five players who were suspended for failing to comply with club standards during a hotel stay in Melbourne on Monday morning.
The players who faced suspension include Isaac Heeney, Nick Blakey, Chad Warner, Riley Bice, and James Jordon. These individuals were subjected to disciplinary action this week due to breaches of club regulations, which involved excessive alcohol consumption and staying out late following their victory against Essendon the previous Sunday.
Additionally, the Victoria Police are investigating an alleged sexual assault that reportedly took place at the Pullman Hotel in Melbourne. As of now, no arrests or charges have been made in connection with the incident.
It is crucial to highlight that there is currently no evidence linking any of the suspended players to the alleged sexual assault, as reports indicate that none have been formally interviewed by law enforcement.
During a press conference held on Friday morning, both Cox and club captain Callum Mills responded to numerous inquiries regarding the situation but chose not to disclose specific details due to the ongoing police investigation.
Cox stated that he was not present in the hotel room at the center of the controversy, having instead dined with club staff that evening. He also mentioned that he was “So we’re still trying to find out information as well.” if any other club personnel were in the room.
“The Sydney Swans can confirm that all investigations carried out by the club have consistently indicated that the only representatives of the club in the room central to the police investigation were the five players who have been stood down,” Cox stated. “We have every reason to consider that reports to the contrary are simply false.”
Following this, the club released a statement confirming that their internal investigation found that only the five suspended players were present in the hotel room.
“We all have women in our lives we deeply love. I would like to express the respect for women is of the highest priority for both myself personally and for our football club,” the statement read.
Furthermore, the club expressed confidence in the accuracy of their findings, asserting, “We have some fantastic women working in our football club … and our thoughts are with them and I apologise to them, along with the women in the community, for the actions of the players. We are extremely disappointed at the actions of the players. And the sanctions imposed by the board show how serious we take these matters. “We’re going to work … as hard as we possibly can to get the trust back from the community, to get the culture where we desire to be, where we once had been.”
Cox remarked that the club’s culture has “taken a massive hit” and reiterated their dedication to rebuilding trust and respect within the community.
